FINALLY, a sushi bar in Southie! J & I were beyond excited when we learned (close to a year ago) that the local breakfast joint that had closed down a few blocks from us was turning into a sushi bar. That was one thing South Boston was missing, and we knew it would do well with the young professional crowd that has moved in. Well, a year later....it's here!
We checked it out during the week since it has been slammed on the weekends. Ash Wednesday may not have been the best of nights to go though...it was still pretty busy. Lucky us, we snagged the last 2 seats at the sushi bar though before the wait started. It's a pretty small space so waiting for a table is a bit awkward...if you know what I mean.
Well we were pleasantly surprised by Moko. A - they don't have a liquor license yet so its BYOB. Oh yes, looove this. B - they gave us a free appetizer while we waited for our food. And let me tell you, it was delicious. A fried wonton filled with shrimp, crab, spicy sauce, etc. #Can't.go.wrong.
We ordered up dumplings, seaweed salad, and 2 special rolls. I let J pick the dumpling order and without thinking, he picked pork. Whoops! So much for no meat on Ash Wednesday....someone pray for us. Would it be insensitive for me to tell you how delicious they were? Perfect combo of crunchiness and softness from being pan fried. I know, we're going to hell. Eating meat on Ash Wednesday might be the last of our worries these days...although I still haven't caved on drinking soda since Lent started!
And you really can't go wrong with seaweed salad. So good, and a bonus - so good for you!
Our sushi rolls were unreal. One was called Wildfire. And it was HOT. Spicy tuna, covered with seared tuna, fresh jalapenos, and a touch of sriracha. To cool things down a bit, I opted for the Salmon Lovers for our second roll. It had salmon, cucumber, and avocado on the inside, more salmon and salmon roe on top. Word to the wise, salmon roe is pretty fishy, with a capital FISHY. Yes, its those large orange balls on the farther sushi roll. J & I were not huge fans of it....quick swipe to the side with the chopstick though, and you're good to go.
And because sushi is always a work of art to me, and who am I to discuss food with no pictures (?!), here are the sushi rolls we indulged in -
Think you'll give this restaurant a try? We'll certainly be going back.
